From the Couch of Ben Johnson

I really wish JavaScript had a range operator. 😢

Week 3 of our Bird Feeder Journey. The birds have flocked to such a degree that there has been a MURDER. We’re punishing them with intermittent fasting for a day.

I would pay good money to watch The Parenting Olympics™. Sample events: Diaper Relay, Solo Bedtime Routine, Doubles Vomit Cleanup, Synchronized Car Seat Installation, Marathon Laundry, Curling.

The Crocs slogan is “Come as you are.” They might as well have made it: “Fuck it, let yourself go.”

There is much room for improvement in bagel slicer technology. I don’t want a giant guillotine contraption or a cheap guide thing where the bagel vacillates wildly from side to side during cutting. But, I also would prefer not to maim my hands. There must be a middle path.

An excellent overview of ways to weigh and balance technical debt: A Taxonomy of Tech Debt

With every passing day it seems like there might be a sequel to Inception about getting Kim Jong-un to give up his nuclear weapons.

My kid is the Donald Trump of 💩. He’s actively pooping: “I’m not pooping! I don’t have to poop! There’s no poops!” Fake news, indeed.

Submitting an app to the Play Store Console and iTunes Connect at the same time is such a great indicator of how terrible Apple is at web services. They’re both modern SPA’s but the server response time is so slow on Apple’s site it’s painful.

TV Show Pitch: A boy’s stuffed animals (named Bunny and Teddy) escape during the day and join Scotland Yard’s White Collar Crimes division while they wait for him to return at night.

That’s my secret, Cap. I’m always tired.

Hey! In our family we say “octopi”. Not this silly “octopusses”. 🐙

Just last weekend I was thinking it was time to start planting for the spring and now there is freezing rain and two inches of snow. 🌱🇨🇦 ❄️

I’m suprised that Apple hadn’t added a system-wide dark mode to iOS yet. They have the ability to strong-arm developers into it. Or they could use Smart Invert to make it “just work” without code changes. It also would gel nicely with the black levels on the new OLED screens.

Someone needs to write a good single-purpose tool for safely doing git squashes. Maybe Tower will add it someday. 😉

Kind of amazed that no network has done a successful procedural show about the CDC (à la Outbreak).

So far this week I’ve got two security notices that my username and passwords have been leaked. Feeling really good about that 1Password subscription right about now.

Alexa Routines make me feel like I’m telling the computer on Star Trek to do a thing. They even include the complete lack of security when running a program.

✴ Subscription Publishing

As much as we’re all going to need to watch our subscription counts, I’m looking forward to the world of subscription publishing Ev describes here.

Anything that increases the quality of journalism is something to be excited about. The resurgence of the Washington Post after Bezos’ purchase is, I think, evidence for the power of what stable revenue can do for publishing. Technology isn’t a good replacement for a lot of talented and motivated reporters.

That said, I don’t think it’s likely that this does much to address media polarization. Maybe with better journalism we get more of the…

This might not be a popular opinion, but I think the Reddit design team did an excellent job on the redesign.

I wonder if the Apple plans to make own Mac processors leak is purposeful. If the Mac OS/iOS bridge is a first step to ARM support, then leaking this a few months before WWDC would be a good hat tip (like with the introduction of size classes).

Just a regular reminder that StillTasty exists and is amazing. Wanna know how long that thing will last in the fridge or freezer? They’ve got you covered.

Paw Patrol is fundamentally libertarian. An incompetent mayor of a town seemingly without any social services relies entirely on an orphaned ten-year-old and his dogs to save everyone from themselves. At least they’re well funded.

I wish Bear had a menu bar item to rapidly switch between themes. Night is a time for a night theme.

Really looking forward to OmniFocus 3. It’ll avoid the current hacks required to manage a sortable Today view.
